All families that attend will receive a Child Identification Kit for each one of their children. The kits consist of a photograph of the child’s head and shoulders in addition to the child’s fingerprints. The ID kits will be provided free of charge.
The Hampshire County Sheriff’s Office will have their iris scan equipment at the event as well. Part of the Children’s Identification and Location Database (CHILD) Project, the Hampshire County iris scan equipment is a valuable tool to help identify and locate missing children through the use of Recognition Biometric Technology.
During the event, the Amherst Police Department and the University of Massachusetts Police Department Child Passenger Safety Seat technicians will be available to inspect and install child passenger safety seats correctly to assure the safest ride for our children. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death for children 2-14 years of age. This is largely due to non use or improper use of child passenger safety seats.
Additionally, the Amherst Fire Department Firefighters will be available for tours of their equipment.
Amherst Police Chief Scott P. Livingstone and our partners in this event are committed to keeping our children safe. The Child Safety Day will take place rain or shine. For more information, please contact Amherst Police Detective Gabe Ting at 413-259-3000 or UPS Store owner Mr. Dan Feldman at 413-549-1070.
This event is funded in part by the Community Policing Grant Program from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.
