Man Arrested After Stealing Christmas Gifts

On December 25, 2011, at approximately 5:00 am, officers from the Amherst Police Department responded to a reported Breaking and Entering in progress at a home in East Amherst. The homeowner witnessed an unknown male exiting his home with several wrapped Christmas gifts, along with other items.

Amherst Police Officers (including an MSP K-9 Unit, UMPD Officers and Amherst College Officers) assisted in the search and set up a perimeter of the area. A short time later, Amherst Police Officer Carlos Gutierrez located and arrested a male approximately 100 yards away from the victim's home. The male was observed hiding from officers in the tree line and was dressed in all black clothing. Officers were able to recover several Christmas gifts that were located nearby.

At this time, two house breaks have been reported in the same area and appear to be connected. The stolen items have been recovered and the male was placed under arrest for two counts of Breaking and Entering in the Nighttime and two counts of Larceny over $250.00. The male was also arrest on an outstanding warrant.

Arrested: Stephen J. Larochelle, age 22, of 159 Old Belchertown Road in Amherst MA. Larochelle was held without bail and is expected to be arraigned at Eastern Hampshire District Court in Belchertown on Tuesday morning.
